OPERATING ENGINEERS LOCAL 542
This comprehensive, extensive,“4 year” Apprenticeship training (over 3000 hours) covered the
Safety, Operation, Inspections and Maintenance of heavy equipment.
No other Crane Training can compare to the Operating Engineers Apprenticeship .
During this period, apprentices learn their trade by:
      1.  Working with skilled journeymen as a Crane “Oiler” on actual job
sites from                    Nuclear power to High Rise construction.
      2.  Attending related classroom instruction and/or field training at the union
                        training site..
Local 542 was one of the first training sites to have a “Tower Crane”. During my
3rd year
( 1977 ), I focused my training as a Tower Crane Operator and to date
have continued my education
in this field
